| dc.description.abstract | In recent years micro finance programmes have become increasingly important schemes for reducing poverty, promoting MSEs development, and for empowering the vulnerable group of people in the society. Prior to micro finance revolution, poor peoples' opportunities to take up loans had been severely limited. It was regarded that poor households could not offer collateral to back up their loans, they were also considered as too poor to save, and the nature of small loans demanded by the poor curtailed the efforts of the banking industry in extending credit. However, in assessing the contribution of MFIs on empowering women respective MFIs were visited and beneficiaries interviewed. It was revealed that MFIs played a very fundamental role in enhancing women's status in the society at large. The information disclosed by beneficiaries reflected the efforts that MFIs have shown in excelling women's development. Further the efforts by women in enhancing their development has multiplier effects for they have benefited family members in areas of education, medical care, and clothing, let alone MSEs growth and development. Since the dominant form of service was credit, there was an urgent need of other services like insurance and education on basic issues so that beneficiaries could make optimum utilization of these facilities. In addition, there was also a need for scaling up the scope of operation so that women in other remote areas could have access to these services. | en_US |
