Abstract
This study examines in detail the factors affecting the performance of collective investment scheme in Tanzania case study being UTT. The UTT was established in 2003 with government support and was expected to have been located all over Tanzania with almost many of Tanzanians as investors.UTT had several objectives on its establishment including making sure that, all the shares which were held in trust are allocated among Tanzanians in such a way that would persuade and ease savings and make wider participation by citizens and hence stimulate involvement in capital markets. Unfortunately, this has been different, and has raised a lot of questions to the factors affecting the performance of this scheme. The research objectives were firstly to evaluate the impact of scheme marketing strategies on performance for UTT, secondly were to investigate the type of investor’s characteristics on performance and investment in collective investment schemes and finally were to evaluate the impacts of environmental factors on performance of UTT.The research methodology comprised of both qualitative and quantitative research design. Primary and secondary data were gathered using structured questionnaire and personal interviews. Data were collected in Dar es Salaam, the major commercial city in Tanzania where the capital market is located. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics using the SPSS software. The Findings suggest that the efforts invested on marketing and creating awareness of mutual fund in Tanzania is very low thus leading to the e very few investors to this scheme. Moreover Mutual fund offices are only located in few cites in Tanzania thus we limiting many investors who would have been interested to join the scheme. The study recommends education to be provided to local investors in order to create awareness on advantages of the capital market. Moreover, improvements of our infrastructure like roads will easy location of more offices in remote areas to give chance to local investors to participate in this scheme
