Agriculture is the mainstay of Tanzania's economy in which it contributes about 50 percent of the Gross Domestic Product. Major export crops include: tea, coffee, sisal, tobacco, cashewnuts, pyrethrum, etc. Thus, the government in trying to promote economic development has been emphasizing expansion of the agricultural sector. However, expansion of production in some of the major export cash crops has a negative impact on the environment. Such impacts include: deforestation, soil erosion and the like. This study have tried to focus on the environmental degradation caused by tobacco production. The area of study is Tabora region because, the region produces about 60 percent of flue cured tobacco produced in Tanzania. Tobacco production is accused for being the main cause of deforestation in Tabora region and thus causing loss of soil fertility through soil erosion. Tobacco production is highly associated with deforestation due to the fact that first, farming system in tobacco production is shifting cultivation which encourages use of virgin land and thus leading to deforestation. Second, tobacco processing requires fuel wood for curing. Thus expansion of tobacco production in terms of both output and acreage causes high rate of deforestation. The main findings of this study are that, tobacco production and population level are the main causes of deforestation in Tabora region. Also the supply response equation have proved that over time tobacco production in the region have been expanding and there the rate of deforestation have been increasing over time. Policy implication of this study is that, given the current expansion of tobacco production, it will reach a time when tobacco producers will be forced out of production due to shortage of fuel wood and virgin land. This raises the need to make tobacco production sustainable. Therefore, tobacco producers must be involved in reforestation.en_US
