Abstract
This study assessed the involvement of parents in students' learning process in public secondary schools in Ileje District, Tanzania. The purpose of the study was to assess the involvement of parents in students' learning process in public secondary schools in Ileje District. There were five specific objectives of the study which include; to assess the awareness of parents of their role in enhancing students' learning process in public secondary schools in Ileje District, to explore how parents are involved in students' learning process in public secondary schools in Ileje District, to assess the extent of parents' involvement in students' learning process in public secondary schools in Ileje District, to examine the strategies used by the school managements to enhance involvement of parents in students' learning process in public secondary schools in Ileje District and to assess the challenges of involvement of parents in students' learning process in public secondary schools in Ileje District. The study used both qualitative and quantitative research approaches and a concurrent triangulation design. The study used a sample of 150 respondents who were obtained through purposive sampling and simple random sampling. Data collection was done through questionnaires, interviews and focus group discussions. Quantitative data were descriptively analyzed and the results were presented in figures. Qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis. The findings indicate that most parents are aware of their role in enhancing students' learning in secondary schools. It was found that parents were involved in students' learning process through different ways such as providing learning materials, supporting children's private study, providing time for children to learn and providing learning strategies to children. However, it was revealed that the involvement of parents in enhancing their children's learning process is generally low. It was further revealed that schools use different strategies to enhance parents' involvement in students' learning process such as using parent-teacher meetings, using Ward Development Committees (WDCs), communicating to parents the students' academic progress and maintaining a welcoming environment to parents at school. Moreover, the findings revealed that involvement of parents in students' learning process encountered several challenges which include inconsistent attendance in parent-teacher meetings, communication problems, parents' attitudes towards teachers, low parents' income and poor implementation of agreements made between teachers and parents. To successfully enhance the involvement of parents in students' learning, the study recommends for schools to review and devise more appropriate strategies that will make parents more involved in their children's learning. Such strategies may include encouraging active volunteering of parents in classroom instruction and encouraging parents to assist their children with take-home assignments.
