Abstract
This study focused on examining the opportunities and challenges associated with
urban sprawl in Tanzania using Mabwepande as a case study. The study employed
both qualitative and quantitative research approaches whereby a questionnaire and an
interview guide were used as tools for primary data collection. The study used both
purposive and random sampling techniques to obtain a sample of 110 respondents. In
addition including 10 government officers were involved as key informants. Findings
from the study generally show that several factors are associated with urban sprawl;
these include such as land ownership, business opportunities such as poultry
production. However a number of challenges were observed. These challenges
included poor sanitation, energy inefficiency, insufficient quality and quantity water,
loss of farmland, insecurity and inadequate social services. Due to the above, the
government and non-governmental organizations were taking initiatives to overcome
thechallenges by construction of social services infrastructures, capacity building and
economic empowerment. The study recommends to the government to involve
communities in implementing its different projects so as to create a sense of
ownership. In addition, it is recommended that residents should use the available
opportunities for income generation instead of waiting for the government to do
everything on their behalf.
