The major interest of the study was to find out empirically within the context of Tanzanian secondary schools what takes place as far as teaching and learning of English literature is concerned. The choice of the subject was done because of the general influence on the behavioral development of students and by the fact that English language according to Tanzania's Education and Training Policy of 1995 is the medium of instruction and a decisive requirement for obtaining Forms IV and VI secondary school certificates. The study adopted a survey design, specifically employing an ethnographic approach. There were six schools as samples and a total of 135 respondents were selected purposively or/and randomly to accomplish the study. The research instruments included the documentary review, classroom observation and semi structured interview. Findings revealed that the syllabuses in use did not guide teachers well to implement the objectives as required, and the existence of different forms of literature in English in schools affects its effective teaching. The input and process evaluations showed that the teaching and learning of English literature was unsatisfactory due to lack of resources, inconsistent instructional approach and lack of observation of the principles of teaching resulting to poor performance. Unless we define and know what we want, our children to get and accomplish, the teaching and learning of Literature in English will continue to have little impact in student's development and education system in general. Thus suggestion is made to introduce Literature in English as a skill subject in our education system from primary level thus developing literary competence and improve their mastery of English language in general.
