Abstract
The main objective of this study was to analyse the impact of selected factors on the effectiveness of the livestock industry market information system specifically, the study attempted to evaluate the extent to which mastering of basic concepts. Analytical skills and institutional arrangement affects the livestock market information system. The study was conducted at Pugu market where different stakeholders including livestock trade officers, farmers and livestock keepers where interviewed by using questionnaires. A total of 45 respondents constituted the sample size. Data collected from respondents were coded and analysed using the special package for social; science (SPSS) computer software both qualitative and quantitative information were among the data used during the analysis. Descriptive statistics (mean and percentage) and regression analysis (ANOVA) were analytical technique employed to analyze the data. The findings of the study reveal that, Livestock marketing Information System (LMIS) remains one of the greatest challenges in the development of the livestock industry in Tanzania. The findings show that at present, there is inadequate utilization of LMIS whereby livestock information Networking System (LINKS) project is the only project which deals with systematic livestock market information. However this information as shown in the study is mostly used only researcher and academician but very few for traders and livestock producers are aware of the system. The study has further revealed that analytical skills has more significant effect on the effectiveness of livestock market information system, followed by mastering basic concept and institutional arrangement. The study recommends that there is a need to impact knowledge and strengthening LMIS to the grassroots level to be able to make rational decisions during conduct their activities.
