Abstract
The study assessed domestic tourists’ attachment to historic sites (as heritage attachment) as well as its dimensions and examined influence on tourist visits to historic sites in Bagamoyo, Tanzania. Mixed research approach through a case study strategy was applied to collect data from a sample of 160 domestic tourists. Results from the study indicated the following five dimensions of heritage attachment among domestic tourists: spirituality, identity, ancestry, oneness and inheritance. Furthermore, it was revealed from this study that there is a positive as well as significant relationship between heritage affection and domestic tourists’ visits to historic sites. In addition, all five dimensions of heritage attachment showed a positive correlation with domestic tourists’ visits to historic sites. However, only spirituality and identity showed statistically significant effects. Unlike past research, the study indicate that domestic tourists’ visits to historic sites is not only determined by motivation, cognitive-based factors such as attitudes as conventionally emphasized, but also determined by affection-based factors of heritage attachment. Thus, theoretically, the study shows significance of affective-based perspective in explaining domestic tourists’ visit to historic sites. The study provides suggestions that inform heritage and tourism managers to design appropriate marketing as well as promotion strategies that would capitalize on people’s attachment to their heritage in order to promote domestic tourism to historic sites. They include regular feedback from domestic tourists regarding their satisfaction with the sites and presents advertisements where residents gather.
