Abstract
This study explored Contribution of the Use of Physics Laboratories in Teaching and Learning of Physics in Community Secondary Schools in Temeke Municipality in Dar es Salaam region. Three research objectives guided the is research: to examine adequacy of physics laboratories in teaching of physics in community secondary schools, to explore the contribution of physics laboratories in teaching and learning of physics in community secondary schools and finally- to explore the challenges facing physics teachers in using physics laboratory in teaching physics in community secondary schools. A total of 115 respondents from 10 selected community secondary schools were involved in this study where. 7 were physics heads of department, 8 were physics teachers and 100 physics students (form three and four) ne mixed method research approach was employed in this study and data were collected using questionnaire. Interview, focus group discussion and observation. Data were analyzed through thematic and descriptive statistics. The main findings of the study revealed that physics laboratories in community secondary schools were in teaching and learning of physics. The laboratories were mainly used for preparing form four students to do national practical examinations. Physics teachers were not frequently using physics laboratory to teach practical activities or to perform physics experiments for lower classes. The study also found out that challenges that affect teachers in their effort to use physics laboratories for teaching and learning physics included shortage of laboratory and laboratory' equipment’s, large number of students in physics class, shortage of physics teachers and laboratory technician. Insufficient time for preparation and conducting practical work and lack of in-service training for physics teachers related to laboratory teaching. The study concluded that. Physics laboratories in community secondary schools were not adequate for teaching and learning of physics and were less effective in the teaching and learning of physics. The study recommended, among others, that the Ministry of Education Science and Technology needs to improve the physics teaching and learning environment in community secondary schools by deploying enough and well trained physics teachers, as well as well-trained laboratory technicians.
