| dc.description.abstract | This thesis examines the demographic situation of the Maasai of the Loliondo division and the associated issues. It is a argued that the division has rapid population increase and has entered the demographic transition stage very recently. This is an outcome of high fertility rate, high in-migration and the relative decline in mortality rate. Indicators of socio-economic and demographic composition suggest that there is an inverse relationship between population increase particularly household composition and per capita household income. The livestock per capita (backbone of the Maasai economy) is declining. Agrarian policies and natural calamities such as droughts and diseases have complicated the situation. This situation has contributed to number of coping strategies including agriculture. It was recommended from this study that a multidisciplinary study need to be undertaken so that the result could be meaningful in understanding the pastoralist demographic characteristics and the social economic problems underlying their development changes. The data for this particular study was collected between 1998 to 2000 using secondary data, survey and focused group discussion in Loliondo division, Arusha, Tanzania. | en_US |
