Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the quality and use of teaching and learning materials iin terms of their relevance, adequacy and appropriateness. Specifically, the study investigated the context of the Kiswahili syllabus and textbooks; the perceptions from the stakeholders regarding the materials and the transactions in the classroom atmosphere in which the materials were expected to be used. The study employed qualitative and quantitative methods for data collection. The sample of the study consisted of teachers and students from selected schools. Collection of data involved documentary review, questionnaire, interviews and classroom observation. Findings revealed that in general, there was congruence in terms of all the objectives, the syllabus content and the prescribed textbooks. However some areas in the syllabus such as the objectives and teaching and learning strategies and the actual use of the prescribed textbook were not adequate and satisfactory enough respectively .In the light of these findings, relevant recommendations for immediate attention, such as review of the syllabus and orientation to teachers and further research have been made.
