Abstract
This study investigated the perceptions of the members of school community towards female heads of co-education secondary schools in Mtwara Region. The objectives of the study were to examine the working relationship between female heads of secondary schools and members of the school community. Also, to find out the extent to which female heads of school were acceptable to the members of school community, and to assess the gender related challenges that face female heads of schools in executing the magerial roles. The study used mainly qualitative approach. The instruments used to collect data were focused group discussions, interviews and questionnaires. Finding revealed that to some extent it was perceived that there was a good relationship between female schools heads and members of the school community as a leaders due to the hegemonic ideology that people have in their mind that women cannot be good leaders. Also female heads of schools, faced a lot of challenges like balancing administrative roles with family roles and married women fighting against the prohibition to be leaders by their spouses. The study recommends that females who are in leaders positions should try their best level to make a difference. They should make more important contribution to the field of education to pave way for other women to become leaders,
