Implementation of school inspection reports on education management and curriculum in teacher training colleges in Iringa region

The purpose of the study was to examine the extent of implementation of school inspection reports in teacher training colleges in Iringa starting from July 2006 – June 2011. The study had four objectives: assessing implementation of school inspection reports on education management and administration in teachers colleges; examining the implementation of school inspection reports on curriculum in teachers’ colleges; finding out the challenges facing implementation of school inspection reports in teachers colleges; and to explore better ways of implementing school inspection reports in teachers colleges. Data for this study was collected from five teachers’ colleges in Iringa Region. The study involved 78 respondents; these were 5 principals, 45 tutors, 12 non-teaching staff and 16 college board members. The study empoyed mainly qualitative approach and some elements of quantitative approch to answer research questions. The required data were collected through interviews, focus group discusions, documentary reviews and observations: qualiative data were processed through content analysis and quantitative data analyzed and presented in tables showing numbers and percentages. The study revealed that in all five teachers’ training colleges implemetation of school inspection reports on management, administration and curriculum was not effective The degree of implementation varied in different aspects. The study also revealed the challenges facing the implementation of school inspection reports such as inadequate school inspectors’recommendations, poor college management,selfishness and irresponsibility, classroom interuption, top-down decision making, poor working condition, frequency changes on the curriculum, shortage of school inspectors in some disciplines and lack of effective communication strategy implementation of school inspection reports. It was concluded that strong top management and authority lead to smooth implementation of college inspection reports. Where the system is weak, implementation of inspection reports is likely to be inadequate. It was also concluded that most of the issues raised as weaknesses by school inspectors in curriculum are within the ability of implementors.It was recommended that accountability in performing duties in all sections be insisted upon.
