The purpose of this study was to investigate the contribution of sports sponsorship to the development of sports in educational institutions. The objectives of the study were; to find out the level of students’ participation in sports in educational institutions; to identify types of sports sponsorship in educational institutions; to assess the contribution of sports sponsorship on the availability of sports resources in educational institutions and to investigate challenges that educational institutions face in seeking sports sponsorship. The study used embedded design through a mixed method approach. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The study sample comprised of 2 university deans of students, 12 heads of schools, 14 sports instructors, 3 corporate sports sponsors and 90 secondary school students and 60 university students. The findings indicated that students’ participation was high in sports such as football, netball, basketball, volleyball and athletics. It was also shown that there was no sports sponsorship in primary and secondary schools studied. It was also noted the presence of occasional sports sponsorship in universities. In addition, the findings revealed that there was insufficient corporate sponsors’ support in the provision and maintenance of sports resources. Most of the available resources in educational institutions were in poor condition. The major challenge faced by educational institutions in seeking sports sponsorship was the failure of corporate sponsors to respond to proposals. The study concluded that sports sponsorship had little contribution to development of sports in educational institutions. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that there is a need for sustainable and reliable sports sponsorship so as to promote and develop sports talents from the grassroots.en_US
