This study was exploratory in nature. It focused on the role of records retention schedule in records management in public institutions. Specific objectives of the study were: to find out the efficacy of records retention schedule in records management at MOI; to determine problems encountered by MOI in records management, retention and disposal and to suggest and recommend better strategies for improving records management at MOI. The sample size for this study was 256 respondents. These were drawn from various departments and units at MOI. Of these 42 of the respondents are Directors, heads of departments and heads of units, 124 are nurses, 62 from the medical department and 28 from human resources and administration departments. These were selected using random sampling techniques. The study was conducted in Dar es Salaam. Data was collected using multiple data collection methods including a questionnaire, observation, interviews and documentary review. Key findings revealed that there is record congestions, limited spaces, and difficult in retrieving records where needed in daily transaction. However, generally the study revealed that there were poor records keeping system at MOI due to lack of records management tools, poor storage facilities, lack of policy, guidelines and procedures manual, lack of support from top management and lack of knowledge of records retention and disposal schedule. Therefore in order to improve records management the study recommended that MOI should develop its own records retention schedule to reduce records congestion. A create an institutional policy together and should abide by the Records and Archives Management Act no 3of 2002. In addition the study suggested that adequate budget should be allocated to records management and there is also a need for support from top management.en_US
