Abstract
This paper is intended to provide background information to assist in the production of a new management plan- for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), Many physical studies have been made of the area, and it would be both impracticable and impertinent to repeat the comprehensive physical reports that have been written. Rather, this paper has concentrated on two aspects which are considered particularly important for the management plan. (l) a physiographic subdivision of the land; (2) on assessment of the current state of- environmental sta¬bility. The paper is divided into four sections (landform rainfall; soils and grasses and erosion); the first of which covers aspect (1), while- the last three are mainly concerned with environmental stability. Woodland, forest and burning are discussed by Nd. I. S. Kikula in a separate paper, A folder of ground colour photographs depicting various aspects of this report, including views of some of the land systems is also available.
