N INKY DARKNESS, hyenas barked and laughed on the Serengeti Plain, then the sun seeped over the horizon, turning the morning from lavender to pink to the flame blue of African daylight Now thousands of moving beasts shimmered at the rim of the sky like a heat mirage—the multitude of wildebeests flowing westward at the end of the rainy season.
