This study aimed at understanding the factors responsible for decline in household cloves production and its impact on household wellbeing in Kiboje Ward, Zanzibar. The study was guided by three specific objectives. One is to assess causes of decline in cloves production, secondly to analyze its implication on people’s wellbeing, and finally the responses of the farmers to the decline. Moreover, the study answered three key research questions. Firstly , what are the causes of decline in clove production?. secondly, what are the implications of this decline on the livelihoods of the farmers and finally what are the responses of the farmers to the changes? . a total of 67 respondents were interviewed in the course of the study. The methodology used in the study involved structure interview and observation. Statistical package for social science (SPSS 11.0) was used for data analysis. Lastly MS Excel was used to draw tables and figures. The results of the analysis suggested that a major cause of decline in clove production is decline in clove market price as suggested by 63% of households. The implication of the decrease in clove market price changes the household livelihood as suggested by 71% of the respondents. As a response many farmers have resisted to develop their clove farming as suggested by 80% of the respondents. The study suggests the intervention measures to diversify clove market and involve farmers in the board that set domestic clove market price. Lastly, clove market policy should be put in place in order to encourage private sector participation in clove production, processing and the provision of marketing services.en_US
