dc.description.abstractThis study investigated the group dynamics in microfinance lending and their effect on business performance using ECLOF as a case study. Data were collected from seventy three respondents from two branches, which are located in Arusha and Mbeya. Structured interviews were conducted to supplement the questionnaire whereby six loan officers and two managers from two branches provided detailed information for the study. In addition two focus group discussions from Arusha and Mbeya were conducted which included six group members who were selected randomly from different groups. Others were two loan officers and two group leaders. The findings indicate that a majority (about 60%) respondent discuss business performance monthly while about a third of them discuss this weekly. About half of the respondents disclosed that they share business information also group meetings enhance interaction and friendship within groups and that make members to share information on market accessibility and where to find cheap commodities. They also exchange entrepreneurial skills regarding how to make more profits. Ninety-five percent of ECLOF clients said that since they joined their groups there are positive changes in their business performance. Due to sharing of strategic information group members gain knowledge and skills to make higher returns than before. The findings also pointed out that loan defaulting affects the business growth of other group members as they use their income to contribute defaulter’s repayment.en_US
