dc.description.abstractThis study assessed the role of Miombo woodlands in sustaining rural livelihood in Mbozi district, Mbeya region. The study was undertaken in two villages, namely Iyenga and Namlonga in Mbozi District. Structured interviews, focused group discussions, key informants interview, participatory observation, transect walk and secondary data reviews were used to collect data for this study. Findings from the study have shown that Miombo woodlands play a significant role in supporting community livelihood in the study area. It provides arable land for agricultural production which is the main livelihood including food and income. It also supports livestock activities through provision of grazing areas and source of charcoal, timber products and income by provides employments in the timber industry. With these emerging Miombo woodlands related livelihood opportunities different socio-economic groups of household (well-off, intermediate and poor) pursued different livelihood strategies in utilization of the miombo woodlands depending on their ownership of livelihood assets. Findings from the study have also revealed that some livelihood related activities such as logging, charcoal making, uncontroled fires and agriculture have negatively affected sustainability of the Miombo woodland resources. The study recommends that, there is need for awareness rising on the importance of the Miombo woodlands focusing on social, economical and environmental aspects to strengthen efforts on conservation of the Miombo woodlands in supporting livelihood.en_US
