Abstract
This study investigated people’s perceptions of corporate social responsibilities (CSR) in Tanzania sugar estates in three wards neighboring Tanzania Plantation Company (TPC) sugar estate. Purposively, the study selected three wards around TPC, namely,Mabogini, Arushachini and Kahe. Data were collected in a month through interviews, questionnaire and observation and analyzed using the SPSS version 16. The study found that community members in the study area were aware of CSR assumed by TPC sugar estate to their community. The findings also indicate that the respondents in the study area were able to indicate the modality used by TPC sugar estate in providing CSR to their community. Furthermore, the study found that people had perceptions that CSR activities are benefiting the community, government and the estate. However, people perceived some weaknesses in provision of CSR from TPC to community leaders. Thus, this study calls for further study on CSR provision and its modality as it has been raised in this study that local leaders undertake a very great part including decision to what support the community has to be given. In development activities, participatory approach is always recommended as it makes development people centered; therefore future researches on CSR are recommended to undertake researches on participatory approach on CSR, effects of CSR to the community and reasons for the firms to undertake CSR.
