Abstract
This research analyses the motivational factors that influence student-teachers to enter into and intention to remain in the teaching profession. The main objective of the study was to examine how student-teachers were motivated to join the profession in the first place and leave it later. The study was prompted by the overwhelming teacher shortages in Tanzania. Data for this study were collected from four public teachers' colleges in Morogoro region. Qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed to collect data from 220 participants by using interview guides, Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and questionnaires. SPSS software and thematic analysis were used in the data analysis. The findings revealed that, low grade entrance qualifications, employment assurance and financial reasons have significantly been found to motivate student-teachers to enter into the teaching profession. Furthermore, it revealed that the majority of student- teachers did not have a long time desire to remain in the teaching profession. It is recommended that the government and other education stakeholders should make an effort to improve the education sector such as increasing salary and improving working conditions so as to make the teaching profession more attractive and thus get the genuinely competent and qualified teachers.
