Abstract
Mining is viewed as one of the important economic activities which have potential contributions to the development of the economies. At the same time environmental, Socio-cultural and economic impacts of mining on surrounding communities have been a major concern to governments, the general public and other organizations stakeholder. Whiles the contributions of mining activities to economic development of Tanzania is well acknowledged, others contend that the gains from the mining sector to the economy is achieved at significant environmental, socio-cultural and economical cost to the country. The study determined the effects of perceived economic, socio-culture and environmental consequences on mining industry in Tanzania; Shanta New Luika Gold Mining Company being a case study. The methodology of the study are data were collected through Questionnaires from the 90 randomly sampled local residents and 10 purposively or judgmental sampled of local Government, health and safety officials which in total gave 100 respondents. The field data were analyzed quantitatively with statistical package for the social sciences using linear regression analysis. The study findings revealed that environmental perceptions are negatively related while economical and socio-cultural perceptions are positively related to resident’s satisfaction. Economical and socio-cultural perceptions were found have significant influence on resident’s satisfactions, likewise the study revealed that environmental perceptions do not have significance influence on local satisfactions. Therefore, the recommendation is that for the improvement, the Government of Tanzania should make conscious efforts to reduce the rate impacts of mining companies in the country. Despite several efforts and measures put in place, the effects of mining activities continue to remain huge, particularly to those living in the mining surrounding and the country at large.
