The study examined the negation patterns in Chasu language. Specifically, it sought to find out the forms of negative markers in Chasu; to determine the distribution of negative markers in verb phrases and in the clauses, and to determine the way these negative markers interact with other morphosyntactic items in the verb phrases. The study reveals that, there are three negative markers which are used in this language which are si, te and sa. The use of these three is determined by the present forms of the clauses and the forms of persons. Concerning clause forms, the findings show that, the negative markers si- and te- are used in the tensed clauses. Conversely, the tenseless clauses use either -si- or -sa-. In the tensed clauses, the negative marker si- agrees with verbs carrying the first person singular subject marker while the negative marker te- agrees with the rest of the forms of persons. The tenseless negative markers -si- and -sa- agree with all forms of persons. The study also found that, these markers are distributed either pre-initially (before SM), or post-initially (after SM) in the verb phrases. At clausal level, they are either distributed at clause-initial or clause-medial position. Lastly, the study shows an interesting interaction between negative markers and other morphosyntactic items in the verb phrases. This interaction triggers changes on the morphology of the verb phrases such as introduction of new morphemes, deletion of some morphemes or change of the morphology of some morphemes. Generally, Chasu negation is similar to a majority of Bantu languages except in the forms of negative markers. The study recommends further study on negation using tone and negation in other sub-dialects of southern and northern Chasu.en_US
