Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the conflict in landscape values for landscape management in Busokelo district Mbeya, Tanzania. The study was conducted in four villages namely Bujingijila, Ipelo, Isale and Ikubo. A total of 100 respondents from the study area were selected as a sample to represent the entire population. Data collection techniques involved were Participatory Mapping, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and field observation. The target groups included community members living near the Rungwe forest reserve. Both spatial and non-spatial techniques such as Microsoft Excel, SPSS and GIS were used to analyze the data while maps, tables, graphs and boxes were used to present the findings. The results revealed that, the causes of conflicts in landscape values in four studied villages of Busokelo district were livestock keepers who graze their cattle in the farms, ignoring boundaries, few grazing areas, and change in landscape value caused by change in land cover, famers and animal keepers encroaching the forest reserve. The types of conflicts observed were conflicts over boundaries, livestock keeper‘s farmer‘s conflicts, famers and forest reserve authority and livestock keepers and forest reserve authority conflicts. The study concludes that; there is need for local participatory landscape management. Respondents require sustainable management decisions. For good solution of Busokelo landscape values and other intervention measures were also proposed. For example the study proposed intensive farming and buffer zone as a good approach where four landscape activities namely agriculture, grazing, forest product and new areas for conservation were discussed and their proper location proposed. The study assures that, this strategy will reduce conflict among landscape user groups and increase sustainable landscape management.
