Abstract
This study investigated elements of patriotism existing among youth in secondary schools of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Basically, the study relied on multiple sources of information and data obtained from both primary and secondary sources. Primary data were obtained from the field in three selected secondary schools, which were Esacs, Benjamin William Mkapa and St. Anthony Secondary Schools in three districts/ municipals in Dar es Salaam region in Tanzania. Secondary data was collected from various literature related to the study. The methodology was guided by descriptive research design. The sampling design was simple random sampling and judge mental sampling techniques, a sample of 108 students was given questionnaires, and all respondents returned questionnaires since the whole process was done in schools in a single day that in each school the student sample required by the researcher was provided where as they sat in a hall and fill the questionnaires and after that the researcher took all the papers and live with them. The other two samples were interviewed. The study showed that most of today’s youth in secondary schools are not patriotic, and the few reported as patriotic for the benefit of the nation. The study further recommends the revival of some institutions to bring about the spirit of love and togetherness among people which will lead to patriotism. Also introduce the National Service Programme as well as the re- structuring of the education system.
