dc.description.abstractThis study examines the contribution of Open Performance Review and Appraisal System on employee performance at the University of Dar es Salaam. Specifically, the study assesses the role of OPRAS in motivating teaching quality, delivering of public services and increasing number of publications. The study adopted explanatory research design and the target population was academicians. A sample size of 100 employees was chosen and administered with questionnaire. Simple random sampling was employed in selecting respondents. Moreover, the data collected were analyzed and processed by using descriptive analysis of percentages techniques and regression analysis to show the relationship between OPRAS and employee performance. The results revealed that there is relationship between OPRAS and teaching quality, public services. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that OPRAS is an effective tool to improve teaching quality, public services and number of publications nevertheless workers are not comfortable with the way OPRAS is conducted at the UDSM. The findings of the study also revealed that staff performance appraisal feedback was not effectively handled. Based on the findings it is recommended that OPRAS should not only be conducted to rate past performance period of employees, but it should focus on improving employee performance and to develop employee professional career. Thus the researcher suggest the area for further study should focus on the reasons that caused the University of Dar es Salaam to delay in adopting OPRASen_US
