S departments are experiencing radical changes in resources, demands and responsibilities. Rising user expectations, pressure to integrate applications and pressure to accomplish with fewer resources are examples of this changes. The executives in this case are looking for ways of improving the results of their decisions. The use of ESS experienced by many executives proves to be the best aiding tool in decision making. This study investigated the effectiveness as well as the implementability of ESS to suit the Tanzanian firms decision requirements. The use of these systems in Tanzanian organisations is new. Very few organisations are aware of the benefits derived when using ESS. However, from the results obtained from the study, those firms that are aware of the systems appear to have been able to increase their decision quality by applying ESS. Many agreed that they have increased their confidence in decisions, to access information that was not otherwise available, to increase job morale as well as having been able to increase return on investment. Likewise, the study established the significant relationships between the organisation characteristics, system characteristics and support from key individuals with the two dependent variables of ESS implementability and effectiveness. The fact that the sample was limited to a small area does not substantially reduce the generalisability of the results obtained which represent the ESS environment in Tanzania.en_US
