This study was conducted at Urafiki textile Mills in Dar es Salaam and Musoma textile Mills in Musoma. Data for this study was collected through a survey. A questionnaire with both closed and open ended questions was distributed to 17 respondents of the managerial cadre and twenty technicians were interviewed. The 37 respondents were randomly selected. The objective of this research was to determine the role of information services in industrial development with particular reference to textile industries. First, the study examined the status of information systems in the two textile industries. Second, the study examined the role of information in industrial development, and problems constraining development of information systems in textile industries, and their impact on productivity and decision making. Finally, the study examined the extent to which information needs of workers in Musoma and Urafiki textile industries are met. In general, major findings of this study revealed that the status of information systems in both Musoma and Urafiki textile Mills were underdeveloped. Even where libraries or documentation centres existed they were permanently closed. Therefore they were inaccessible to the majority of the workers. In such a situation information needs of workers were not met. Findings also revealed that a majority of workers are aware that information is a critical factor in decision making and planning. Factors constraining the development of information systems in both Musoma and Urafiki textile Mills were ignorance of the role of information, lack of funding and also ignorance of information technology and its application potentials. Staff meetings, seminars, conferences, workshops and training are important means for communicating or transferring information to workers. However, respondents in both industries indicated that meetings or seminars are not conducted regularly.en_US
