dc.description.abstract | The level of birth registration in many developing countries including Tanzania seems to be very low. This indicates that there are some obstacles which hinder parents from registering their children. This study aimed to investigate obstacles to birth registration in Njombe Town Council and it employed the exploratory research design. Two wards, Njombe town and Mji Mwema were studied. The researcher administered questionnaires, interviews and focus group Discussions as methods of collecting primary data. The main findings indicate that, there are number of obstacles to birth registration in Njombe Town Council. The major obstacles were lack of awareness, high cost in registration process, bureaucracy, improper/abusive language used by workers in the office of registrar and individual negligence. They extent of awareness on the benefits of birth registration at Njombe Town seemed to be lower level. The majority of participants indicated that lack of awareness on issues of birth registration has made a number of people in the council to have low understanding of issues of birth registration. However, the majority of respondents understand that the process of birth registration takes place in the District Commissioner’s office. The study recommends that there should be intensive strategies to create awareness to the communities on the importance of birth registration. Also there should be comprehensive reforms in the service provision and review registration legislation. Moreover the study recommends that RITA establishes to link birth registration with other services. | en_US |
