| dc.description.abstract | This study evaluates impacts of coastal tourism on community livelihoods in Nungwi, Zanzibar. The general objective of this study is to gain an in-depth understanding of the impacts of coastal tourism to the community livelihoods. Hence, specifically the study is focused (i) to review and analyse tourism related policies and institutional set up (ii) to evaluate positive and negative impacts of coastal tourism of the community livelihoods assets before and after tourism in Nungwi village and, (iii) to set recommendations on future development for sustainable tourism in the study area. Research methodologies used for data collection were documental review, focus groups discussions, interviews, field observation and household survey. The study population includes government officials, private tourism organizations and randomly selected (of 100) households in the study area. Research findings noted that, about 65% of the total respondents were of the opinion that tourism had brought them opportunities such as fishing, petty trading, roads, communications services, energy, transportation and construction. while, 60% of the respondents argued on prevailing negative impacts caused by tourism in social demolition culture and religion. Finally, it is recommended that, in order to maximize positive impacts while minimizing negative ones, the government is required to develop appropriate and sustainable supportive policies to be strategically formulated using Sustainable Livelihood Framework, where livelihood assets can easily examine, modified and effectively adopted. | en_US |
