| dc.description.abstract | The study assesses challenges which face exportation of cloves in Zanzibar. The data were collected through interviews. Analysis of secondary data was done using MS Excel and thematic method was used to analyse data collected through interview. In a nutshell, the findings of the study shows that clove production in Zanzibar have not been stable in recent years due to climatic change, diseases and failure to replace old trees with new ones. The study also reveals that there is a strong relationship between clove production and export.It also establishes that world price fluctuation and clove export has a close relationship, in a sense that when the world price is high result to high export and verse versa. Again, the study reveals that there is close association between Zanzibar economy and performance of clove export. Further, the study establishes the effect of smuggling on clove export and Zanzibar economy in terms of quantity and foreign exchange earnings. The main causes for smuggling of cloves include, ZSTC monopoly, bureaucracy selling procedure, political motivation and corruption.Therefore, the study recommended the government of Zanzibar to liberalize the clove industry by allowing more investors and exporter in the industry. Again more reform should be undertaken to improve clove production and exportation. | en_US |
