Immediate action is necessary in the areas most severely affected by desertification. Programmes to combat desertification must be formulated in accordance with an integrated and comprehensive development plan capable of going beyond the limits of sectorial approaches. Naturally, prioritization on a rational level must be based on fairly accurate assessment of desertification problems. This task will be entrusted to the National Council for Combating Desertification and its components. There is a favored tendency to concentrate on regional (provincial) level in selecting priorities. The UNEP mission, on recommendation from the responsible contacts, has visited some of high priority desertification areas in connection with proposing some projects for consideration.en_US
