dc.description.abstractThis study examined the role of the tailoring training programme to economic development of youth in urban district in Zanzibar. The study was guided by four research objectives, namely: to examine the curriculum contents of the tailoring programme; to identify the socio-economic benefits of the programme to youths; to explore challenges facing the tailoring programme; and to suggest strategies improving it. A total of 20 research participants were involved in the study and were obtained firstly through simple random sampling and then purposive sampling techniques. The data were gathered through observation, interview and documentary review and analysed through qualitative procedures. The findings unveiled that tailoring programme offered various knowledge and skills such as dressmaking for both male and female clothes, embroidery using machine and manual skills with hands as well as provision of first aid and other life skills for life improvement. The programme transmitted such knowledge and skills through practical exercises and provided guidance and counseling services to accelerate learners’ optimal learning. Further, the programme took own strategies to improve its implementation as buying and producing teaching and learning materials, improve the learning environment by increasing and improving T/L infrastructures such as classrooms, toilets and vocational study materials and advancing to graduates funds for capital to enhance utilisation of their competences for their livelihood development in the community. Indeed, these assimilated knowledge and skills from the tailoring programme assisted trainees to secure employment in both public and private sectors. Most of the graduates were employing themselves instead of being employed by others. Additionally, the programme helped to reduce crimes, unacceptable behaviours and marginalised groups in the society since graduates got opportunities to participate in different occupational sectors or industries and increased markets of their tailoring products. However, the programme faced challenges such as inadequate teaching and learning materials, an unfriendly learning environment. Exclusion of tutors in the process of curriculum development increased the chance of having an irrelevant content. These shortfalls were the main obstacles to significantly attain its cherished objectives. Therefore, the study recommends that the involvement of all stakeholders including tutors in changing the curriculum or any matter concerning the curriculum planning and development has to be taken into serious consideration.en_US
