Abstract
This study analyses the relationship between forest royalties (revenues) collection and conservation trade-off. It does so by estimating the long run relationship between forest cover and revenue collection via co-integration models and OLS method. The dissertation compares the primary data collected in the field survey and time series data that covers the period between 1980 and 2012 and assess if there exists a long run relationship between forest cover and revenue collected. The study area is the Mkuranga district which its location is close to the Dar es Salaam city and its forest resources are mostly impacted by the increasing population in Dar es Salaam. The empirical results of this dissertation confirms a long run relationship between forest cover and royalties collection. Such findings suggests that increased revenue from forest royalty is accompanied by reduced forest cover and ultimately deforestation.Other findings of the dissertation are that charcoal is the most critical source of revenues and also deforestation. The population of the study area appears to have less impact on both deforestation and as a source of forest related revenues. Furthermore, the effects of education on forest cover is less and pick up after some time from three years. Growth of population especially in Dar es Salaam city significantly affects the forest cover in the forests surveyed. The main conclusion of this dissertation is that forest revenues such as royalties should not form a major source of revenues to sustain the forests for future.
