dc.description.abstractThis study aimed at investigating the Practicability of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) of French Language in Tanzanian Secondary Schools. The literature shows that little is known about the implementation of French Language CLT in Tanzania. This study applied qualitative research approach. The nature of the study necessitated to explore in detail social, organizational and respondents’ individual behaviours and inteprete them to get their meanings. The case study design was applied in this study. The Ilala municipality was selected and studied intensively in order to get deailed information about practical implementation of CLT. The sample of this study consisted of ten French Language teachers from four secondary schools of Ilala municipality, four quality assurers and thirty two students. The data collection methods included interview, focus group discussion, documents review and classroom observation. The collected data were analysed by using content analysis. The findings of the study showed that French language teachers are not well trained in the use of communicative language teaching. There is scarcity of teaching and learning materials. It is concluded that CLT is not effectively practicable in Tanzanian Secondary Schools. It is recommended that improvements should be made such as providing pre-service training on CLT to new French language teachers and in-service training to all French language teachers. The textbooks and supplementary learning materials should be available and the classrooms should have facilities such as audio visual material for FL learning.en_US
