| dc.description.abstract | This brief history commences with the first people who have left traces of their occupation for all to see. There is of course a wealth of the history of mankind hidden below ground in the area, particularly at Olduvai, but it needs a trained eye and a trained brain to unravel these mysteries. But it is the Stone Bowl people who first left visible evidence of their presence, stretching from Seronera across the Serengeti and into the Ngorongoro Crater. On the Serengeti there is as yet no evidence of people following the Stone Bowl folk until the Maasai appeared at the beginning of the last century. But on the east there was a flourishing community based on irrigation at Engaruka, at the base of the Rift (just outside the Conservation Area) whose culture extended into the Area at the base of Oldeani Mountain. This culture reached its peak about 500 years ago. In the Ngorongoro Highlands there is evidence of pre-Maasai occupation by the pastoral Tatog, a Nilo-hamitic people allied to the Nandi of Kenya, and of the Cushitic Iraqw or Mbulu who now form such a flourishing community to the south of the Conservation Area. | en_US |
