Sesame production in Tanzania its implication on household welfare and environment (deforestation); the case study of Kilwa district (Lindi Region)

| dc.description.abstract | Tanzania economy depends heavenly on agricultural sector where it saves about 80% of rural livelihood. Despite the fact the agriculture sector saves majority of population i t also contribute to deforestation over tune due to poor fanning practices such as shifting cultivation. Therefore there has been laugh link between agriculture sector and deforestation as well as welfare of the rural community given their reliance on the forest for their livelihood. This study attempt to investigate the implication of agricultural product ion. in particular a high valued sesame production on household and deforestation. The study area is in Kilwa district foW1d in Lindi region. Lindi region is one of the leading sesame producers in the country. Sesame production years has become important crop to smallholders farmers since with minimum expenditure and simple tools for cultivation, fanner are able to obtain high return. The positive trends of price for sesame crop have attracted fanners to join the cultivation and others ha\ e expanded the agricultural land but still poor farming methods such as shifting cultivation which encourages use of virgin land is still used hence it is likely that sesame crop may accelerate deforestation despite the fact that it may influence household welfare positive. The household survey is done m Kilwa district for six villages whereby 310 households are interviewed in order to determine their decision to clear new land for the last farming season as well as to examine the influence of sesame production on welfare. Therefore, the study uses probity model to examines whether sesame production may influence clearance of new area, moreover, it uses productivity model (pro) of welfare) to access whether sesame crop influence household welfare. Other variables are included in the two models to see their influence on each dependent variable. The main findings of this study indicates that despite the fact that sesame production influence household welfare positively, it is also likely to affect the environment negatively (result into deforestation). Moreover, descriptive statistics shows that there is significant difference between household sesame growers and non-sesame growers interms of wealth, expenditure and land cleared there is a need to put policies and programs which will ensure sustainable agricultural production, household welfare as well as conserving environment such as sustainable agricultural practise, income diversification and improving access to social services. | en_US |
