dc.description.abstractThis study aimed at developing methodological framework for integrating Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Scientific Ecological Knowledge (SEK) for promoting local communities' participation in the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) at local community levels. The study specifically observed how TEK and SEK are used in assessing environmental changes in the semi-arid landscape; identified traditional and scientific indicators used for landscapes assessments; and developed a model for assessing environmental changes in the semi-arid landscape of Maasai Steppe in Northern Tanzania. Data were collected through interviews, observation, content analysis and joint field assessment; and analysed using Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet, QGIS tool. The study findings show that the Maasai herders, like ecologists, have qualitative systematic approach of assessing landscape changes and synthesise the changes in relation to various ecological and anthropogenic factors. Maasai herders use multiple indicators such as livestock productivity, landscape grazing potential, vegetation and soil characteristics to monitor and access landscape conditions. Maasai TEK on landscape classification, species identification, landscape conditions, and adaptive management strategies can be scientifically validated, and can be integrated with SEK. Based on the study findings, systematic framework to integrate TEK and SEK for assessing environmental changes in the semi-arid landscape of Maasai Steppe in Northern Tanzania was developed. The study recommends the use of framework that integrates TEK and SEK to achieve CBD global goals through participation of local communities in their areas.en_US
