dc.description.abstractThis study investigated the role of the libraries at primary school. The study focused on six- selected primary schools. Three of the schools had a library while the other three had no library. Data for this study was collected through questionnaire, interview and observation, methods. Major findings of this study revealed that a school library is crucial in facilitating educational development including teaching and learning. Finding further revealed that a school library can help pupils to develop reading and long life learning habits. In a school library various information could be disseminated by focusing on the level and interest of the pupils. It was also revealed that even where there is a school library, it is underutilized because it is closed most of the time and there is no fulltime-qualified school librarians to manage the library. Moreover, teachers and other stakeholders have done little to sensitize and encourage parents, Community Based Organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations to participate in establishing primary school libraries. It is recommended that each primary school should have a library in order to improve the quality of teaching and learning. A trained librarian should be recruited to manage the library and the library should have a wide variety of educational and recreational resources.en_US
