Abstract
Water shortage is a serious concern both in arid and semi-arid regions in Africa and in some other parts of the word where it is likely to lead into a crisis and hence consequences in planning. Equally important, water shortage at the University Of Dodoma (UDOM), characterized by semi-arid climate is one of the biggest planning concerns. This study aimed at evaluating the water demand at UDOM and assessing the potential for establishing Rainwater Harvesting System as the supplement source of water. The study used both primary and secondary data, in which catchment area was calculated as primary data from the buildings and played areas. Secondary data such as monthly rainfall data for 41 years consecutively (1971-2012) were collected from Dodoma Airport Meteorological Stations. The findings revealed that the current UDOM water demand to support about 24,527 individuals is 6,510000 liters per day. It was found that roof with a total area of 231,681 m 2 is the main catchment area for collecting water at UDOM, and the average annual rainfall is 595.12 mm. Futhermore, findings revealed that a potential of 110,280,536.8 liters per year equivalent to 612,669.64 liters per day (9.4 of daily demand) can be available from harvested rainwater. Also it was observed that non-potable water demand is larger than rainwater harvested due to small roof area to population density ratio. Conclusively, the potential for rainwater harvesting at UDOM is huge as revealed by this study. Moreover, rainwater harvesting will still be the environmentally friendly and economical alternative source for various uses at UDOM if the reservoir catchments will be used instead. Additionally regulations policy bylaws and codes should be established to enforce incorporation of rainwater harvesting system in every building.
