The main objective of this study was to examine the socio-economic context of orphan hood and the manner it influences HIV/AIDS risk taking behaviours. The study aimed at answering the following question, “why is it that despite the fact that orphans are informed, they still engage in behaviours that places them at risk. The study also highlighted the factors at work that hinder orphans from applying HIV knowledge. Total samples of 50 informants were involved in the study. A mixed method approach was used in data collection and a narrative analysis model was used in data analysis. The principal methods of data collection were in depth interviews and focus group discussions. Analysis of the findings revealed that, the majority of orphans are left without any support after their parents’ death and have decided to go into the orphanages or in the streets. However, their life situation becomes worse due to economic hardship; insufficient and inappropriate love, care, guidance and hence orphans are forced to engage in some risky behaviours in search for these needs. It was noted that, for a female orphan sex be it with different people, with an older person and with or without condom, is often viewed as an avenue to meet her needs quickly. On the other hand, being in school, having enough money and fear for the disease were identified as factors which could prevent an orphan from engaging in these risky behaviours. The study recommends that, orphan support programmes may be the appropriate mechanism targeting at increasing orphans access to their necessities, so as to reduce the motivation to engage in risk behaviours. It was further recommended that, orphans should be provided with proper education to enable them fight the war against their vulnerability which exposes them to risk behaviours.en_US
