Abstract
Land dispossession is one of the most challenging questions in land management in Tanzania. It is undesired by the land owners as they have to be dispossessed without their will. However, the land owners have been dispossessed their land through sale or through compulsory acquisition it is clear that land dispossession pose serious threats to community’s socio-economic development. The study examined current socio-economic and livelihood status of community members whose land was dispossessed, the drivers behind land dispossession, the impacts and ways to address bottlenecks related to land dispossession in the studying area. The study used a sample size of 126 respondents from three wards, namely Kiwangwa, Fukayosi and Zinga Ward. The employed interviewers, questionnaires, observation and Focus Group Discussion (FGDs) as data collection methods. Results indicated that land dispossession affected local people negatively because they lost an important source for their livelihoods. The majority lost their source of income, source of food, employment opportunities and an important asset for collateral. It was also revealed that some communities were totally displaced from their ancestral land. Such pattern led to increased poverty in rural areas due to policies and laws formulated in favor of private companies/foreigners.
