Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the teaching and learning of French language in Tanzania with special reference to the role of library service provision. The study investigated various methodologies used in teaching and learning French in selected institutions. The study also examined teaching and learning resources in school libraries. The objectives of the study were: to find out why few students opt for French language; to determine strategies in order to improve effective use of library services in the teaching and learning of French; to find out information resources available in libraries for French language teaching and learning; and to suggest possible ways through which students can be motivated to make use of library resources in learning languages. Data was collected using structured questionnaire, face-to-face interviews and observation. Thereafter data was interpreted by using cross tabulation. There were three population categories namely students, teachers and librarians. The findings revealed that students who are doing science subjects do not study French. It was further revealed that school libraries especially in pilot schools support the teaching and learning of French to some extent. Some schools have got very few French language teaching and learning resources such as books, video and audio-cassettes. The study concludes that school libraries can play a very important role to support the teaching and learning of French if teachers are well trained and students are motivated as far as teaching and learning methodologies are concerned. The study recommends the cooperation between teachers and librarians in order to find out ways to improve library services in order to support the teaching and learning of French.
