dc.description.abstractThe study sought to investigate the Tanzanian EFL teachers’ perceptions and attitudes towards CLT. It specifically meant to achieve the following objectives: to find out teachers’ perceptions of CLT, to explore teachers’ attitudes towards the practice, and to establish the extent to which EFL teachers’ preferred classroom language T/L activities comply with CLT. A review of literature showed that the challenges faced by most countries in the world including Tanzania in implementation of CLT approach include the difficulties which emanate from language teachers, difficulties caused by learners themselves, difficulties caused by the education system and difficulties caused by the approach itself. The study was a case study in design employed Dunkin and Biddle’s (1974) model as a theoretical framework. It involved, during data collection, ten (10) teachers from five (5) secondary schools in Morogoro Municipality. Collection of data was done through questionnaire, interview, observation and documentary review. The findings revealed that most of teachers had positive attitudes and perceptions towards CLT, but their perceptions and attitudes were not congruent with their pedagogical behaviours hence concluded traditional methods still exist and used in classrooms. On the basis of these findings, it is recommended the government should review its teachers’ training curricular to enable trainees acquire relevant knowledge and skills for effective implementation of CLT approach.en_US
