dc.description.abstractHealth and safety has now become a World agenda due to different factors such as rapid scientific and technological development and continuously changing world of work and economics. Therefore the purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of health and safety practices in Government Institutions focusing on availability of health and safety gears, employees’ awareness on health and safety, top management concern on health and safety. It also assessed factors that hinder the effective health and safety at the University of Dar es salaam. A survey was conducted among employees to establish the level of awareness and implementation of health and safety by viewing availability of gears, top management concern and factors that hinder health and safety. The findings of the study revealed insufficient health and safety practices at the University of Dar es salaam due to inadequate provision of health and safety gears, inadequate training on health and safety matters, absence of health and safety policy at the University and little support from top management regarding health and safety matters. The study recommended and revealed the importance of training and creating a health and safety culture/practices, provision of adequate personal protective gears and other tools to employees, support from University top management, having knowledgeable and responsible health and safety personnel, establishing best practice guidelines and policies at the University and having regular health and safety inspection in order to have effective health and safety at the University.en_US
