Abstract
This study focused on the investigated the effectiveness of non-governmental organization in rehabilitation of street children in Dar es Salaam city. The main research objectives were to assess if strategies established by the selected NGOs in rehabilitating street children in Dar es salaam were met or not, evaluating the opportunities possessed by the selected NGOs and constraints that undermine the effectiveness of NGOs towards rehabilitating street children in Dar es Salaam as well as identifying and assessing services given to street children if they are sustainable and able to rehabilitate the problem of street children. To achieve this, the researcher used interviews, questionnaires and documentary review, descriptive case study was used to analyze the research tasks coherent with research questions. The qualitative approach was mainly employed in collecting and analyzing data. Some of the information obtained was converted into percentages for descriptions and conclusion. The study found that strategies employed by NGOs included streets work, conducting interviews, and conducting medical checkup and screening conducting counselling family tracing, family or society reunification, reach out programme and follow up programme. In addition the study identified services given to rehabilitee children as food, shelter, medical care, education, vocational training, and talents development. All of these services were made possible due to support given to NGOs by donor’s agencies private companies, individuals, and the Government, however, the study identified problems that limit the NGOs efforts to complete their mission to be shortage of funds to carry out their operations, lack of community and Government support, poor working environment, poor educational background and lack of trust among children. It is recommended that the Government allocates some funds to assist NGOs that are doing well as well as to establish Government centres that will serve the same purpose.
