dc.description.abstract | Despite the fact that Performance appraisal practices are principally supposed to be non-confidential to both appraisers and appraisees, yet experience shows that in most Tanzania's work organizations, the performance appraisal practices and outcomes are regarded to be confidential even to the appraisers. This study aimed at investigating factors contributing to the lack of transparency in executing the performance appraisal function. The study made use of two organizations as case studies, that is, Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (TANESCO) and Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL). The findings indicated that, about 60% of managers interviewed neither understood the philosophy nor the procedures and processes involved in the performance appraisal function: Furthermore, it was found that the reasons behind the lack of transparency in the execution of the function can be categorized into four; Conflict Aversiveness, Ignorance of the Function, Absence of Effective Performance Appraisal Policies, and Unfairness in the Execution of the Function. It was also observed that despite most employees lack of awareness on the philosophy of performance appraisal procedures and processes involved in carrying it out, they showed keen interest in having open and transparent appraisal of their performance. Finally, we recommend that there should be both intensive and extensive training programmes to be administered to managers and employees in order to enhance their understanding of the philosophy underlying the performance appraisal and the procedures and processes involved in carrying out the function. | en_US |
