The purpose of this study was to explore the parents’ involvement in community secondary schools in Kinondoni Municipality. The study have three objectives which are to examine the ways in which parents are involved in community secondary schools, determine the barriers hindering parents involvement and lastly to explore the strategies employed by school management to increase involvement in community secondary schools. The study employed a qualitative research approach using case study design. The sample of the study was 68 respondents which included teachers, students, parents and head of schools that were selected using purposive sampling, stratified random sampling and convenience sampling techniques. The findings showed that parents were involved in educational matters through different ways such as parents attending school meetings, provision of financial contributions towards school development, provision of learning materials, employing part time teachers and the provision of school uniforms however the extent of participation varying from one school to another. Moreover, the findings showed that, the minimal parents’ participation is a result of challenges encountered by parents such as poor economic status, parents’ low beliefs in the value of education, lack of cooperation with school administration and absence of time. Furthermore, the findings showed that, the school heads employed various strategies to increase parents’ involvement in community schools, such as improving communication with parents, the use of school boards, the use of ward executive officers, the use of political leaders and building positive teachers attitude towards parents involvement in education matters. The researcher recommended that the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology should recognize the role of parents towards the development of schools hence increase sensitization for parents to be involved effectively in education matters of their children. Also it was recommended that, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology should provide training for teachers and heads of schools on how to increase parents’ involvement in education matters. It was further recommended that parents and community as a whole should work with schools and teachers to ensure teaching and learning activities take place effectively. It was also recommended that similar study should be conducted to other regions and councils, other kinds of schools such as public and private schools. It was further recommended that a comparative study should be conducted between primary schools and secondary schools to explore parents’ involvement in education matters.en_US
