This study investigates same of the major factors, which are hindering people's willingness to participate in environmental conservation with particular reference to the urban squatter areas. The dissertation is divided into five chapters. The first chapter covers the introduction. It includes the background to the problem, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, significance, limitations of the case study, the hypothesis and definition of key concepts. Chapter two is the literature review and theoretical framework. It briefly explains the concepts: awareness of environmental conservation, participation, education, attitudes as well as methods and approaches used in environmental conservation. Furthermore, it discusses the theoretical framework according to other various sources of literature based on people's management and involvement in conservation activities. Chapter three explains the area covered by study and factors that influenced the researcher to carry out this study in Kigogo ward. It further deals with the research methods employed in this study. It explains the scope of the study; defines population and explains sampling procedures undertaken in doing the study; explains and justifies the data collection methods that included documentary review, questionnaires, observation and interviews; and also explains methods of data analysis, interpretation and presentation. Limitations of the study have also been explained in this chapter. Chapter four constitutes the research findings. The chapter discusses the results obtained from the fieldwork. It shows how the findings were analysed. It mainly discusses the profile of the Kigogo Community, ownership of houses, social services provided, environmental knowledge and awareness, women and environmental conservation, environmental education in schools, types of business carried out and their impacts to the environment, leaders’ role in environmental conservation and the roles of NGOs and CBOs in conservation activities. The last chapter consists of the summary, conclusion and recommendation of the study. The study concludes that community participation helps to conserve the environment but this is far from being achieved in Tanzania. It also recommends that in order to achieve a sustainable society all actors at all levels have important roles to play.en_US
